Understanding Dementia
Dementia is not a single disease — it is an umbrella term for a group of symptoms affecting memory, thinking, and social abilities severely enough to interfere with daily life. It is caused by damage to brain cells, and it progresses over time.
Alzheimer's Disease
The most common form, accounting for 60–80% of cases. Characterized by gradual memory loss, confusion, and changes in behavior.
Vascular Dementia
Often follows a stroke or series of small strokes. Symptoms may appear suddenly and include problems with reasoning, planning, and judgment.
Lewy Body Dementia
Involves abnormal protein deposits in the brain. May cause visual hallucinations, sleep disturbances, and movement problems similar to Parkinson's.
Frontotemporal Dementia
Affects the front and sides of the brain. Often presents as personality changes, impulsive behavior, or language difficulties before memory loss.
Early Warning Signs
Recognizing dementia early gives families more time to plan, connect with support, and access care. Common early signs include:
- Forgetting recently learned information or important dates
- Asking the same questions repeatedly
- Difficulty completing familiar tasks at home or at work
- Confusion about time, place, or people
- Trouble finding words or following conversations
- Withdrawal from social activities or hobbies
- Changes in mood, personality, or judgment
- Misplacing items and being unable to retrace steps
"Early recognition gives families time — time to plan, to connect, and to be present."
If you have noticed changes in a loved one and are unsure whether they are signs of dementia or normal aging, a psychiatric evaluation can provide clarity and peace of mind.

Community Outreach in Action
Dementia Education at an Assisted Living Facility in Jensen Beach
Recently, Razvan Gheorghe, PMHNP-BC, visited an assisted living facility in Jensen Beach to lead an in-depth educational session on dementia — its stages, behavioral symptoms, and how caregivers can respond with confidence and compassion. The turnout was remarkable. Staff members, caregivers, and facility leadership gathered to ask questions, share their experiences, and learn practical strategies for supporting residents living with cognitive decline. These conversations matter deeply — because the people in that room are on the front lines every single day, and they deserve the knowledge and support to do their work with greater clarity and less fear. This is exactly the kind of community engagement that Mental Clarity Care is committed to bringing to the Treasure Coast.
Serving the Treasure Coast
Outreach events and community talks are held throughout the Port St. Lucie, Stuart, Lake Forest (LF), Jensen Beach, Palm City, and Hobe Sound areas. Telehealth psychiatric services are available to patients across all of Florida.
